DAVID KEFFORD 14 -17 August 2008 David Kefford created a site-specific sculpture on the Wish Tower slope during Airbourne, Eastbourne’s International Air Show, 14 -17 August. The sculpture utilised and re-used recycled materials from on and off-site to create an innovative representation for Airbourne. Kefford used a variety of re-cycled materials (cardboard, tins, plastics, bottles) and low-tech processes (cutting, wrapping, taping, binding) in order to create a semi-abstract, surreal sculpture. The base of the sculpture was built from the tail of an aircraft which Kefford selected from the Imperial War Museum, Duxford. By adding other discarded items the sculpture was built over the four days of the Airbourne event. David Kefford collects ordinary, discarded and un-loved objects as source material and starting points for making his work; employing an everyday vernacular and economic resourcefulness. The objects are often collected from city streets, purchased from car boot sales and charity shops, or donated by friends and family. More recently, internet sites such as ebay and free-cycle have also been utilised. In his studio, low-tech, DIY processes are applied to deliberately manipulate, re-configure and alter these accumulated objects in an effort to produce new things with an uncanny sensibility. There is a willful attempt to breathe new life into these rejected items. For further information on David Kefford’s work please visit www.davidkefford.com
